Tour of Japan 2016
1st Stage Sakai
The 2.65km individual time trial was held in Daisen Park, Sakai City, Osaka on the first day of Tour of Japan 2016, starting on Sunday 29th May.
The course is almost all flat, but a series of curves makes riders need a lot of power and skills.
Anthony GIACOPPO (AVANTI ISOWHEY SPORT) won the first stage Sakai with the average speed of 47.9km in the course. Nariyuki MASUDA (UTSUNOMIYA BLITZEN) has become the best Japanese rider in the first stage and ranked the 3rd with two seconds time behind GIACOPPO.
All riders have participated in Sakai International Criterium and JBCF (Japan Bicycle Club Federation) Sakai Criterium was held prior to the 1st stage of Tour of Japan.
The blue sky helped to boost the number of spectators with 76,000 people, about 5,000 more than last year.
GIACOPPO is an all-rounder and won the Tour of Kumano Prologue in 2012.
He says “I have raced in Sakai stage before and the course is very fast and technical. We were afraid of rain, but I am happy about the result. Tomorrow’s race will be a tough stage, but hopefully we can get another win.”
MASUDA commented “I didn’t like a short-distance time trial, but I have worked on the weak point for these few years and happy to get the 3rd rank today. It might rain tomorrow morning and I heard that the course needs a lot of skills. I believe that it will be important to get the good position to win the race, so that I will actively move forward and hopefully get a good result.”

第1ステージ堺 結果
5月29日（日）から始まったツアー・オブ・ジャパン2016。第1ステージ堺は大阪府堺市の大仙公園を1周する2.65kmの個人TT。
およそ平坦だがコーナーが連続する区間などあり、パワーとテクニックの両方必要なコース。ここを平均時速47.9キロで駆け抜けたアンソニー・ジャコッポ（アヴァンティ アイソウェイスポーツ）が優勝。
日本人選手では増田成幸（宇都宮ブリッツェン）が2秒差の3位に食い込んだ。朝からの好天も手伝い昨年を5000人上回る主催者発表7万6000人の来場者を数えた。
アンソニー・ジャコッポは2012年ツール・ド・熊野プロローグ優勝など経験のあるオールラウンダー。「堺はとてもテクニカルなコースだけれども雨にも降られず勝ててうれしいです。明日の京都ステージはとても難しいレースになると思いますが優勝を狙いたいと思っています」。
また増田は「短い距離のタイムトライアルは苦手だったが、ここ数年苦手分野の強化に取り組み、今日こうやって、3位という結果ながら形になって、良かったと思う。明日は午前中雨になる確率が高く、また他のチームからテクニカルなコースだと聞いている。位置取りの勝負になると思うので、積極的に前で動いて、いい結果につなげたいと思う」とコメントした。
